Cinnamon is a highly delicious food enjoyed by many people and is one of the favorite
household spice used anywhere in the world. The spice was once traded as currency and is
treasured since ancient times considering its medicinal properties. In the present day this
medicinal property has been proven scientifically.
Cinnamon comes from sun drying of the peeled off inner bark of a small evergreen tree. Thisspice therefore curls up and can be found in sticks. It also can be grinded and mad into a fine powder. The small evergreen tree is best grown in tropical regions. There are two types of cinnamons as Ceylon Cinnamon which is the main type of cinnamon grown in the
Cinnamomum Zeylancium plant that originates in Sri Lanka and Cassia Cinnamon which is
slightly cheaper and has a strong taste. Most form of commercial cinnamon is a mixture of
the above two types.

Although there are two types of cinnamon the nutrient value of both remain the same.
Cinnamon in common have many desirable medicinal and soothing effects. In Chinese herbalmedicine cinnamon is used often. The distinctive fragrance and flavor of cinnamon is due tothe presence of essential oils. These oils present are called cinnamaldehyde and it oftenexhibit properties of antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Cinnamon also contains largeamounts of polyphenol antioxidants which can help protect the body from disease. Theseantioxidants are often found in fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs. There are also highamounts of manganese and small amounts of calcium and fiber in cinnamon.
Inflammation is one of the main defense mechanism in the body. This helps the body to fight
infections and repair the damaged tissue. However chronic or long term inflammation is
troublesome form many people and the body itself since the defense mechanisms used to
fight infections will act out on the body itself. Cinnamon is used in various anti-inflammatory medications. The main reason to use it is because of the anti-inflammatory properties present in cinnamons anti-oxidants. Therefore, cinnamon can be also used as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Heart diseases are one of the world’s most common causes of premature deaths. The main
cause of heart disease is cholesterol. Cinnamon has been related to reduce risk of heart
diseases. A gram of cinnamon in your daily food has been proven beneficial on your body’s
blood makers. Blood makers help reduce the level of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and
triglycerides while maintaining the HDL cholesterol which is the cholesterol needed for our
body. In recent studies 120 milligrams of cinnamon per day has proven to increase the HDL

cholesterol or good cholesterol amount in the body. Another key contributor to heart diseasesis high blood pressure. Using controlled animal tests researchers have shown that short term consumption of cinnamon has proven to reduce blood pressure. This evidence is still in the testing phase and has not come to a conclusion yet.
The key hormone that regulates metabolism and energy use is insulin. Insulin also helps in
the transportation of blood sugars from the blood stream into various cells in the human
body. However, many people are resistant to the effects of this important hormone and this
condition is called ‘insulin resistance’. This is an indication of other serious conditions like
metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance can be dramatically mitigated by the use of cinnamon. Now you know that insulin resistance can be reduced by the use of cinnamon. This directly effect to the lowering of blood sugar levels. There are other ways that blood sugar is lowered by cinnamon. The lowering of the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream after a meal
is reduced by the use of cinnamon. The mechanism for this process is that cinnamon
interferes with the digestive enzymes that breakdown carbohydrates. By this is slows down
the breakdown in the digestive tract. Cinnamon has small ability to mimic the effects of
insulin thereby increasing the uptake of glucose by the cells and not allowing it to stay in the
bloodstream. Even though this affect has proven to be slower than insulin itself it has been
effective. Numerous human trials have shown that cinnamon has anti-diabetic effects with
and effective dose of 1-6 grams of cinnamon per day.

disorders.Although cinnamon can be kept for about a year it needs to be stored in a dry container in a dark place unless it will lose its flavor and nutritional value.
